Abstract

Installing VirtualBox Guest Additions to Guest OS enables convenient functions (e.g. sharing files or clipboard between Host OS and Guest OS.)

In this article, I will report my installation of VirtualBox Guest Additions on Slackware Linux 14.1(as Guest OS.)

I referred [1].

Setup

Go to http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/ and directory of your VirtualBox virsion, download VBoxGuestAdditions_<version>.iso. In my case, I downloaded VBoxGuestAdditions_4.3.10.iso.

Boot your Guest OS on VirtualBox, click Device -> Virtual CD/DVD Disk File in VirtualBox menu, choose the VBoxGuestAdditions_<version>.iso.

Mount CD/DVD device:

% su -
# mount /dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom

change directory to CD/DVD and run ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run by super user.

# cd /mnt/cdrom
# sh ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run

After successful installation, reboot at Guest OS:

# reboot

In Slackware, following three initial scripts were added:

/etc/rc.d/rc.vboxadd
/etc/rc.d/rc.vboxadd-service
/etc/rc.d/rc.vboxadd-x11

and following script was added into /etc/rc.d/rc.local:

# Start vboxadd
# If you do not wish this to be executed here then comment it out,
# and the installer will skip it next time.
if [ -x /etc/rc.d/rc.vboxadd ]; then
    /etc/rc.d/rc.vboxadd start
fi

# Start vboxadd-service
# If you do not wish this to be executed here then comment it out,
# and the installer will skip it next time.
if [ -x /etc/rc.d/rc.vboxadd-service ]; then
    /etc/rc.d/rc.vboxadd-service start
fi

# Start vboxadd-x11
# If you do not wish this to be executed here then comment it out,
# and the installer will skip it next time.
if [ -x /etc/rc.d/rc.vboxadd-x11 ]; then
    /etc/rc.d/rc.vboxadd-x11 start
fi

Mount share folders

Click Device -> Shared Folders on VirtualBox menu bar, then add folders of Host OS to share.

To mount on Guest OS,

mount -t vboxsf <shared_folder_name> <mount-point>
